Relocation Checklist

  • Complete post office change of address form
  • Make copies of all important documents, even if hand carrying them, in case of loss
  • Check laws and requirements of your new city or state with regard to any professional or business laws that might pertain to you
  • make arrangements with moving company or truck rental firm four to six weeks prior to moving
  • obtain binding estimate from the moving company
  • be sure the contract is completely filled out – including total amounts.
  • Be sure contract guarantees amount of hours job will take
  • Do not agree to more than an overrun of 10%
  • Know what the moving company's policy is regarding loss or damages
  • Check homeowners policy for moving damage or loss coverage
  • Watch loading/unloading and examine items carefully before signing receipt
  • Document inventory of belongings before packing
  • Photograph items of value and record relevant serial numbers
  • Purchase packing supplies; boxes,markers,bubble wrap,tissue paper and tape
  • Pack books on end in small boxes
  • Try to avoid loading more than 50 pounds per box
  • Purchase specially designed boxes for your dishes and wardrobe
  • Label boxes with contents and in which room they are to be placed
  • Label “fragile” on all boxes containing breakable items
  • Take all valuables and medications with you
  • Check all rooms, closets, pantry's etc to be sure nothing is left behind
  • If moving plants to another state, check with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture as to any specific plant type restrictions
  • Notify utility companies at departure and destination locations as to when to switch off/on services two weeks prior to moving
  • Make arrangements with airline,car rental company, truck rental, hotel reservations three to four weeks prior to moving
  • Confirm all rental, hotel arrangements one week prior to move
  • If taking a pet with you on an airline, be sure to obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian. The certificate cannot be more than ten days old
  • The pet must be transported in a special pet container with adequate food and water available
  • Arrangements can also be made with companies specializing in shipping pets. Be sure to coordinate your arrival with your pet's, or make arrangements with someone to receive and care for your pet until you arrive
  • Call the Solid Waste Division for instructions on disposing of any hazardous wastes you may have before moving
  • Make banking arrangements; close accounts at home/open new accounts at destination. Obtain travelers checks before leaving for safe, available funds
  • Arriving at your new location: If in a different state you will have to apply for a new driver's license, car registration and license plate
  • If in a new state, obtain legal advice as to wills, and other legalities
  • Notify IRS and your auto insurance company as to your new location and address
