Sugar Land Texas Real EstateAptly named Sugar Land Texas was founded as a sugar plantation in the mid-1800's. Shortly after the turn of the century, the Imperial Sugar Company set up headquarters and established its main refinery there, simultaneously developing housing for its workers. Sugar Land has come a long way from a “company town” to one of the fastest growing suburbs in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Area. Home of the nation's largest number of master-planned communities, Sugarland is continuing to attract young professionals and Fortune 500 companies to its environs.
No longer an agriculturally based “blue collar” town, Sugar Land is home to numerous regional and international engineering, construction technology, electronics and communication corporations, as well as companies engaged in oil and gas exploration. Considered one of the “most livable” cities in the country, Sugar Land offers its citizens – now approaching 76,000 – a high quality of life. Opportunities available for working close to home, the year-round recreational activities, numerous upscale restaurants, art galleries and boutiques continue to attract new residents.
Considering the area's overall affluence, home prices are surprisingly modest when compared to similarly upscale areas around the west and southwest United States with single family residences averaging from just under $200,000 to slightly over $300,000. As an example:
In addition to reasonable housing costs, Sugar Land's economy is gaining jobs at a faster rate than the national average. Adding still another plus for living in this area are six universities:
All are located between ten and twenty-one miles from Sugar Land.
